In context of the allowed application for the German Space Administration (DLR) support programme STudentische Experimental-RaketeN (STERN), students of di erent semesters will develop, manufacture and launch a small research rocket within their main study period education at the TU Dresden.

The students therefore shall become acquainted with the subject small rocket and all its sub-systems, which yet comprehend the same systems like large scale carrier rockets. Thus every student gets a complete system-wide overview of a complex technological device from lay out design to quality control.

In the course of the development a portable test bench for a combustion chamber with 500 N thrust will be designed, manufactured and certi ed. A mobile workshop, a transportable test and launch centre and further ground segment units are part of the collegiate examination projects as well. At the test bench students will learn the handling of the media Liquid Oxygen (LOX), Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) and ethanol and develop and qualify a novel mixing jet with a corresponding combustion chamber. The developments of the test bench as well as the design of the reusable rocket are e.g. according to material selection or constructive detailed solutions main aspects of the aspired project. In addition the rocket will carry a payload module, witch could provide future research projects a transport facility up to 5 km height.

Besides the test bench and the rocket itself within the projeckt the entire infrastructure for test, preparation and execution of launch is developed. Further this sites will be designed modular and mobile for transport to testing grounds and back. All aspects of the undertaking are passing in cooperation with the MORABA (mobile rocketbase) the entire for a aerospace project typicall review process, whitch means additional experience for our students.

With the fi rst essential stage of financing reached by participation in STERN, the foundation for a young investigator group „Liquid-fueled rocketry“ will be
established. The vision exists to develop novel combustion chambers with altitude-adaptive staged expansion nozzle for single stage rockets of all size.
